Abstract: The Respiratory Assessment presentation, presented by Regina Kendall (Nurse Practioner, Grampians Regional Palliative Care team) and Tom Whelan (Nurse Practioner candidate, St Vincents Hospital Palliative Care Team) accompanied the workshop session 'Essential nursing knowledge and the skills needed to conduct comprehensive respiratory and abdominal clinical assessment' (conducted by Karen Quinn) held Thursday 5th Sept, 2013. The stated aim of the presentation was to assist participants develop an understanding of the importance of good respiratory assessment, illustrate some of the normal pysiology of the respiratory system, and create a systematic framework for undertaking respiratory assessment including note taking and examination, the completion of which would lead to treating reversible pathology if appropriate, optiminising medication for chronic conditions, and sympton management.
