In rural areas, managing confidentiality can be complex. There are three issues to be addressed for professional practice in rural areas: guarding privileged knowledge, use of client-related knowledge gained informally, and rural service delivery considerations, that protect client privacy and confidentiality. In 2000, a research project , sponsored by the University of Ballarat, explored these issues with rural social work and welfare practitioners in the Grampians Region of Victoria. Using a range of methods, including mailed questionnaires (23 respondents), forums (attendance approximately 40), and six individual, in-depth interviews, questions were asked relating to rural practice, and particularly professional and personal boundaries. Significant concern was expressed about managing dual and multiple relationships where information is received in a variety of ways. Other concerns highlighted the dilemmas confronting rural social welfare workers about community expectations and duty to warn, and protecting clients from gossip and innuendo.en_US
